Er studierte Physische Geographie und Geologie in Utrecht, Frankfurt am Main und Delft und promovierte in Utrecht in Mathematik und Physik. War Lehrer in Breda, später Professor für Physische Geographie an der Universität Amsterdam und Leiter des dortigen Physikalisch-Geographischen Labors.
