The brother of Ivor Brett-James, was born in 1920. He was educated at Mill Hill where his father taught history and at Cambridge University. On the outbreak of the Second World War he joined the British Army. As a member of the Royal Corps of Signals, Brett-James served in Egypt, Syria, India and Burma. After the war he became Head of the War Studies Department at Sandhurst
