Samuel S. B. Taylor, chair in French, St. Andrews U. - Samuel Sorby Brittain Taylor was born on 20 September 1930 in Dore, Derbyshire. He was the son of Samuel Stephen and Elsie Irene (Chappell) Taylor. He studied at the University of Birmingham and was awarded a BA in French in 1952 and a PhD in 1957. He was personnel research officer at the Dunlop Rubber Company from 1958 to 1960, research fellow at the Institute Voltaire, Geneva from 1960 to 1963, and then taught at the University of St Andrews from 1963 to 1995 where he specialised in eighteenth century studies. He was Director of the Nuffield Foundation French for Scientists Project from 1991-1999, and Chairman of the Scottish National Working Party on Standard Grade (Languages). He was awarded the Ordre des Palmes Academiques (France) and was named Honorary Blue, Athletic Union St. Andrews University in 2000. He was timekeeper for athletics Scottish Athletics Federation, and a member of the National Council for Modern Languages and the Society for 18th Century Studies
